Chinkin Natsume ''Kiku zume'' - Matcha Caddy

This Matcha caddy is embellished with chrysanthemum motifs rendered in Chinkin — a traditional technique in which fine lines and dots are carved into the lacquer surface and inlaid with gold powder.

Patterns are engraved on drawing, then lay Urushi lacquer into the engraved line. After that inserting gold or silver leaf/powder into the engraved groove.

Crafted from natural wood and lacquer, this piece embodies the elegance and depth of Japanese tea culture. The intricate pattern of densely arranged chrysanthemums symbolizes longevity and refinement.

Meaning as ‘‘filled chrysanthemum’’, this surreal expression of the Chinkin ‘‘Kiku zume’’ Natsume is achieved by the countless lines and dots engraved by different blade shapes, angle, and depth. This exquisite work is created by Hiroshi Ozeki, who is acknowledged as traditional artisan by Akita prefecture, where 800 year-Urushi lacquerware tradition’s been living.
