Tenugui
Tenugui
Tenugui is a piece of thin fabric cloth made of cotton or linen. The usage of Tenugui is very broad: can be used as dish cloth, hand towel, wash cloth, fold in half as table set, wrapping fabric, bandanas, and scarf.
The History of Tenugui dates back to Heian period (794 to 1185) and from Edo era (1600 - 1868), it became what they are today, thin plain woven, the fixed size of 90 x 34cm, and with the decorative patterns.
Tenugui is dyed using the method called ‘‘ Katazome’’ or ''Chusen'' by hand, which enables different kind of patterns and colours. The both edges are deliverately left open without being sewn due to a hygienic reason: the one of main usage of Tenugui was as wash cloth in the bath (Sento and Onsen) and it had to be dried quickly.
