Mitate - Matcha bowl
Mitate is a concept that we see or use a thing as if it is, although it’s not made for that purpose originally.
For example, this bowl is not necessarily made for Matcha, but you can use it as a Matcha bowl, as if it is. . This type of usage is very common in Japan, because the border of a thing is not very clear in general in Japan. Also the potter tend to want to leave the possibility of usage left open.
This Mitate concept lies deeply in Japanese culture.
The most common example of Mitate can be seen in Japanese garden. In Japanese garden, whole nature is expressed: a mountain with a tree, a cliff with a stone, sea by sands. All of these expression comes from Mitate concept.
This bowl is made in Yamaguchi prefecture and the pottery made in this region is called Hagiyaki.
Please bear in mind that the size is bigger than traditional Matcha bowl, although it surprisingly fits well for drinking Matcha. The deep Matcha green colour matches well this orange beige, and also it creates a beautiful *Tchadamari.
*Tchadamari is a kind of Matcha ‘‘pond’’ that are last some drops of Matcha being left in the deepest part of the bowl.
