What is Urushi?
Urushi originally referred simply to the resin of lacquer tree, but has since become a collective term for tableware and utensils made of wood, on which the Urushi resin has been applied. By applying Urushi resin on wood, the surface becomes solid and water-resistance. It’s a wisdom of ancient people. In Japan, Urushi lacquerware had been used at least since 9000 years ago.
Besides its high aesthetic appearance, Urushi lacquerware offers also several functions stemming from its natural materials, such as antibacterial effect, heat resistance, thermal insulation, oil resistance, and antiseptic action.
Last years, I encountered some Urushi artisans and people who’s been dedicated in Urushi lacquerware production and making an extraordinary effort for the continuation of this tradition. The more I learn, the more I start become want to showcase real Urushi lacquerware at Onoda.
Please come and see the exquisite work made by individual artisans.
