MITTAN Autumn/Winter

MITTAN is an independent Japanese brand started in 2013 by Mitani Takeshi with the strong philosophy on clothing whose inspiration came from the folk costume of the time, when people still used to have the  sense of the cycle of life.

MITTAN focuses on clothing which produces the least loss of fabric: for example, their Jeans and denim jacket  has no selvedge (selvedge is the coloured edge of the fabric which is commonly recognised as a high quality denim). After they realised that, just to gain this ''title'' of selvedge, they have to waste so much amount of the  fabric due to the limited width,  they decided to make them without it. For, the essence of their clothing lies not in selvedge, but the textile itself and the production background behind it.

MITTAN considers their clothes not as fashion, but product, that product which ought to be loved, worn repeatedly until it has tears and holes, and then repaired and worn again.

All their clothes allow the traceability with the QR code on their brand paper tags: they provide the information about the fabric and production.  Since the start of the brand, MITTAN places value on the ''ancient'' material such as hemp and linen, as well as the natural dyeing technique such as Indigo and Bengala. Moreover, they switched all of their knitwear material source to Mulesing free wool.

''Through our activity, we want to create an impact to the fashion industry in a good way: because the apparel is such a giant industry, where so many people get involved, the more people learn about the background of the clothes they are wearing, the more change in their recognition and behaviour will occur. In this way, we can reduce the waste, and at the same time, rebuild a better relationship between people and clothes.''
