A resin extracted from the bark of Styrax trees, a tall evergreen tree from the Styracaceae family, native to Southeast Asia.

Its maple-like amber color provides a sweet vanilla fragrance.

Benzoin was used in ancient Egyptian ritual ceremonies and also as an herbal medicine to heal the respiratory system.
